BYPASS WINTER SKIN BLUES
I’m here to tell you that your skin NEEDS YOU to take extra care of it in winter. You cannot expect to be doing the same routine with your skin when the showers get hotter and the winds get cooler. Your lips get chapped for a reason and no amount of Vaseline is going to fix them!
You must take extra care to hydrate and revitalize your skin to keep it from drying out.
Cool winter temperatures and low humidity levels, combined with hot showers and soap-based products can pull moisture from the skin. On the surface, skin looks dull, feels tight, dry and itchy. At a microscopic level a lack of moisture and oil weakens your skin’s natural protective barrier, leaving it susceptible to invading chemicals causing redness, irritation and sensitivity.
Here are my top tips to bypassing your winter skin blues.
1. Drink lots of water as it helps your skin stay plump, moist, and beautiful in the cold winter weather. You stress your skin going from the cold outdoors to the super-heated, dry air of indoors, and drinking plenty of water will help keep your skin from showing the effects. You will essentially repair your skin from the inside out by staying sufficiently hydrated.
2. Layering on extra hydration during colder seasons will restore lost moisture and relieve dry, thirsty skin. This is where I have to spritz my skin with my toner as soon as I’m out of the shower – water on top of the skin actually dehydrates, so its important to relieve the tightness with a hydrating toner. Then I put my serum on, which usually is full of ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Vitamin A,C,E and rosehip oil and lastly apply my moisturiser on top.
3. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove old dead skin. This stimulates new skin to grow and improves circulation, which can renew your dull complexion. Always use a mild exfoliating agent that contains natural abrasives. Look at the ingredient list; it should contain items like fine oatmeal, ground rice, or seeds. Do not exfoliate more than three times a week, or you’ll reverse all your hard work.

4. For an added boost on the nights that you exfoliate, apply a hydrating skin masque 2 to 3 times a week after cleansing to calm, infuse skin with protective antioxidant vitamins, and restore moisture for fewer fine lines.
5. As salads with leafy green vegetables seem to be 2nd choice to a nice warm soup in the cooler months make sure you are getting as much nutrients as possible. I still love my juice and smoothies during winter and I add a bit of chili to them which not only is a flu fighter, and joint supporting ingredient, it literally warms me up to!
Above all make sure you are getting enough sunlight in winter. Here in Queensland we are so fortunate to have beautiful winter days, but Vitamin D from the sun is so important for the body and skin to function efficiently, I don’t mean bake in it but, 30 minutes of outdoor sun will boost your mood and your skin will thank you for it.
